Gamcheon Culture Village

Since the renovation in 2009, Gamcheon Culture Village has become a tourist hot spot. It’s known for its multicolored roofs and buildings, maze-like layered streets and murals along the walls.

This area was built during the 1920’s and 30’s as a way to relocate working class people away from the port but close enough for labor. It was post Korean War 1955 that saw over 800 families move in. It’s no longer just a housing district - there are several trinket shops, restaurants, museums and coffee shops along the way.

One of my favorites was The Home Market. It’s right at the top of the hill and has a great view of the slope of Gamcheon, as well as a large courtyard with art pieces, and adorable handmade jewelry pieces inside.

In 2009 a public art renovation project took place and tourism has been growing ever since. In fact, in 2015 it saw 1.4 million visitors! Every street and hidden alleyway is colorful and decorated. There are bird installations, scenes from The Little Prince, and a bookcase staircase.

You can purchase the stamp passport at the visitor center and collect stamps along your way. Don’t forget to be courteous and quiet as people do still live here! There is no entrance fee to the Gamcheon Culture Village, Busan. The village is open 24/7 but most of the businesses are open between 9 am and 6 pm. Gamcheon Culture Village is about 20 minutes from Busan Station and 45 minutes from Haeundae.
