Hotel Review: The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam
The Hoxton Lloyd Amsterdam vintage style Photo Booth.
This past December, we booked a stay at The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam after our Northern European cruise. I initially found this hotel through the American Express Travel port and it hotel boasted so many unique features, from its historical charm to beautifully curated rooms, that I was intrigued.
LOCATION AND AMBIANCE
Situated in the Eastern Docklands and housed in a building originally commissioned by the Royal Holland Lloyd Shipping Company in 1921, The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam blends rich history with modern comfort. With 136 thoughtfully designed bedrooms, a stylish cocktail bar, and a European brasserie offering delicious dining options, it’s a perfect blend of timeless elegance and contemporary flair.
The hotel's design is a stunning mix of contemporary elegance and classic touches, with each space thoughtfully curated to provide a welcoming, lived-in feel. Warm tones, velvet fabrics, and mid-century modern pieces create an inviting atmosphere. The inviting lobby features cozy corners with plush seating, offering a place to relax or enjoy a drink from the on-site bar.
Each room felt like a carefully curated blend of textures and colors, with elements of the building’s history tastefully preserved, making it not only stylish but also inviting and full of character. The bold colors and blend of textures felt very reminiscent of being at home for us.
One thing the girls absolutely loved at this hotel was the vintage-style photo booth. It quickly became their favorite spot and It was a charming touch that added a bit of nostalgia and extra fun to our visit.

While waiting for my family to be ready one day, I took the opportunity to explore all the floors of The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam. The hotel’s design is full of unique features that kept me intrigued. One of the most striking elements were the floor-level windows, offering a view of the hallway below—an unusual but captivating design choice. As I made my way up and down the staircases, I discovered that some staircases completely skipped floors, adding a quirky, almost playful touch to the hotel’s layout. It was these unexpected design surprises that made the hotel feel so full of character.
THE ROOMS: BIGGY BUNK UP
For me, my husband and daughters, I booked the Biggy Bunk Up room. The room was incredibly spacious, especially after a week spent on a cruise ship, where space was at a premium. A queen bed with a cozy seating area was thoughtfully separated from the bunk beds by the bathroom and living space, creating the illusion of separate rooms. This layout proved to be a perfect fit for our family, offering a sense of privacy while maintaining an open, inviting feel. I’ve found that if our girls can’t see our bed, they sleep better.
A bench near the front door was the perfect spot to kick off our shoes after a long day of exploring, offering a comfortable and convenient place to unwind before fully entering the room. There were also three coat hanger systems, thoughtfully placed throughout the room, which allowed us to easily hang up each day's clothes. This clever setup kept all of our outerwear and cold weather gear organized and made it easy to grab our outfits for the next day.
There was a table with four chairs, which would have been perfect for enjoying meals, but we mostly used it as a play space for the kids. It quickly became their go-to spot for arts and crafts and Barbie play.
However, it was the color palette and mid-century decor that truly captivated me about the hotel. The blend of warm, earthy tones with sleek, retro-inspired furniture made the space feel like home. Every detail was carefully curated to enhance the overall aesthetic, offering a visual delight at every turn.

THE ROOMS: STUDIO
The sleeping area in the studio room with the bed tucked nicely between the original wood beams.
While the bunk beds were a huge plus for our family, it was the studio room that I was most excited about. The open layout, combined with thoughtful design and ample space, offered the perfect balance of comfort and functionality. What really stood out was how the hotel beautifully preserved the unique features of the building, particularly the wooden beams and original structure of the room. These elements gave the space a character that felt rooted in the building’s history. I booked this room for my in-laws but not so secretly wanted to stay here myself.
In fact, this room layout inspired me so much that I came home and redesigned our guest room/husband's office. The clever way they divided the room with a TV console sparked new ideas for how to create distinct spaces without sacrificing openness. It was a simple yet effective solution that made the room feel more organized and functional, inspiring me to apply the same concept to our own layout at home.

DINING: BREMAN BRASSERIE
I'm not ashamed to admit that we ate at this hotel restaurant three times during our stay. The menu, though small, was thoughtfully curated with a great variety of delicious options, and the pricing was spot-on. Even better, there were offerings that our kids actually enjoyed, making it a perfect, convenient choice for the whole family.
PROS // CONS
The hotel boasts spacious rooms making it a great option for families. With a family-friendly atmosphere, it’s easy to relax and enjoy your stay. The on-site coffee shop and restaurant are a convenient perk, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Plus, it's easily accessible by car, bike and public transit, with the added bonus of free bikes available to borrow for exploring the area.
In my opinion, the pros far outweigh the cons here. However, it’s worth noting that the hotel is about a 30-minute walk from the city center, which may not be ideal for tourists looking to be closer to the heart of the action. Additionally, there aren't many restaurants or cafes within a 10-minute radius, so be prepared for a bit of a walk if you’re craving variety in the neighborhood.
